What To Know When Buying Cowboy Boots

If you have childhood memories of watching John Wayne and you still want to be like him, then why not embrace your inner Western and spruce up your wardrobe? Although you may not want to show up to work in a cowboy hat and poncho, one thing that may be worth investing in is a pair of cowboy boots.

Because cowboy boots can be at least several hundred dollars, you want to make sure that you are investing in a pair that will last for years to come.

Look at the Toe Shape

When you are out shopping for cowboy up apparel like shoes, you will notice that they come in a variety of different toe shapes including:

  • Square
  • Round
  • Traditional
  • Snip

Look at the Heel Height

If you are a little bit on the shorter side of life, then one of the things that you may really love about a good pair of cowboy boots is that they tend to give you some added height. In fact, authentic cowboy boots have what is called a Cuban Heel which has a heel that's at least 1 to 2 inches in height. If you are taller, then you may want to look for boots that are on the lower end of things (1 inch), but any lower than that and you aren't going to be looking at cowboy boots anymore.

Choose Ones With a Tall Shaft

Authentic cowboy boots should go up your calf about 10 to 14 inches on average. Whether you decide to tuck your pants into your boots or you just leave your pants untucked, the shafts will make a difference regarding how they will fit with your clothing. When you are trying on a pair of boots, bring the pants that you are most likely to wear with them and try them out to see if they are what you want. Sometimes choosing boots that have a shorter shaft will make them more versatile with the pants that you are going to wear.

Calf Leather

Good cowboy boots are always made of leather and ones that are even higher quality are made from calf leather which tends to be softer. While your cowboy boots may be a bit stiff and require some breaking in at first, the leather on them should last a long time and age really well.
